Surgical lip restoration or Cheiloplasty is a very simple cosmetic intervention which gives sensuality and volume necessary to lips for beautifying and rejuvenating the face. This treatment can be used to increase or decrease the volume of lips or to correct congenital or acquired anatomical alterations.

Lip Restoration - Overview

Surgical lip restoration or Cheiloplasty is a very simple cosmetic intervention which gives sensuality and volume necessary to lips for beautifying and rejuvenating the face. This treatment can be used to increase or decrease the volume of lips or to correct congenital or acquired anatomical alterations.

There are three types of Cheiloplasty:

  • Lip Augmentation or Augmentation Cheiloplasty– This type of procedure is beneficial for those who have thin lips or lips that lost their volume due to facial ageing.
  • Reduction Cheiloplasty– This type of procedure is beneficial for those who have overdeveloped lips those are not very harmonious with their other facial features.
  • Corrective Cheiloplasty– This type of procedure is beneficial for those who have suffered alterations in their lips caused by tumour, trauma, burns or lesions or by congenital alterations such as harelip or cleft lip.

Lip Restoration - Symptoms

  • Patient can opt for Cheiloplasty willingly to beautify and rejuvenate the face.
  • Patient who have harelip or cleft lip (opening or splits in the upper lip) mainly babies needs this procedure also known as palatoplasty. These patients have some symptoms like:
  • Difficulty with feedings
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Nasal speaking voice
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Speech difficulty

Lip Restoration - Pre-Procedure

  • Avoid blood thinners and ibuprofen, two weeks prior to surgery.
  • Patient need to be on N.P.O (not eating anything orally), eight hours prior to surgery.
  • If you are a smoker than stop smoking two weeks prior to surgery.

Lip Restoration - During Procedure

  • Rhinoplasty is a procedure which is usually done as an Outpatient, means there is no need to stay in hospital overnight.
  • During procedure, patient will be under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia.
  • In the procedure fat will be injected or fat connected to subcutaneous tissue will be threaded into the lip.
  • Tissue will be obtained from patient’s own fat deposit under chin area or from the abdomen.

Lip Restoration - Post-Procedure

  • Do not touch lips after surgery.
  • There may be mild and moderate pain for few days after surgery.
  • Final shape of the lip will be apparent after it healed completely.
  • Patient can return to his/her social activities within two or three weeks of the surgery.

Lip Restoration - Risk & Complications

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Poor healing of incisions
  • Irregular healing of scars including shortening, thickening or overgrowth
  • Anaesthesia risk
  • Respiratory problem after surgery
  • Residual irregularities and asymmetries in the lip or nose
  • Oral dysfunction
